English Close Contact Saddle
The English close contact saddle, as the name implies, gives the rider the closest contact possible to the horse. With minimal padding and a lower profile, the close contact saddle allows the rider to feel as much movement from the horse as possible, without riding bareback.
Due to the lack of padding and a shallower seat, this saddle is not suited for beginners who may need a little more support and stability for them to keep their balance. Beginners may also have a hard time keeping their legs in a proper position with the thinner knee rolls.
Riders who do a lot of jumping prefer this saddle because of the freedom of movement it provides. The lower profile allows the rider to quickly and easily transition from a half-seat position into a two-point position. The leg flaps of the saddle are also slightly forward, lending support for these jumping positions. There are normally three standard length billets on the close contact saddle, ensuring stability and security when used for jumping.
Riders who compete in hunt seat equitation also prefer the close contact saddle. The saddle allows the rider more freedom, flexibility, and a better grip on the horse. With the minimal padding and thinner knee rolls, the rider can easily give the horse more subtle cues, which is important in any equitation class.
If a rider wants the closest possible contact with their horse without a lot of padding in between them, the English close contact saddle will provide it.
