English Jumping Saddles

The English jumping saddle, sometimes called a forward-seat saddle, has a slightly different design than other saddles. As the name suggests, the jumping saddle is ideal for riders who mostly jump during their ride, and do only minimal flatwork.

The jumping saddle has a shallower seat as well as a lower pommel and cantle to facilitate the rider’s proper form while jumping fences. Quick turns and multiple jumps require freedom and flexibility, and the overall design of the saddle helps the rider to quickly and easily shift their weight in the saddle and get into the half-seat and two-point positions used over fences. The shallow seat is also beneficial for the rider to be able to feel the movement of the horse beneath them and use their weight to give cues.

The leg flaps and stirrup bars of the jumping saddle are more forward than other saddles to help accommodate the position of the rider’s knees with the shorter stirrup length needed when jumping. This saddle also has thicker knee rolls to provide not only added comfort and stability for the rider, but also to help keep the rider’s legs positioned correctly. The jumping saddle also utilizes three billets for attaching the girth. The billets can be either a standard length or slightly shorter to provide additional security while jumping fences.
